oh Australia
Last night I spent a little time flipping through the Lonely Planet guide to Australia. Every time I look into Australia I find that I am adding things: more money, more time, more things to see/do. I tend to forget just how big the country is and am overwhelmed by the vast amount of distances I want to cover in such a short amount of time. I will most likely end up only focusing, like many of the tourists, on the eastern coast. I think I will start in Sydney and then make my way north to Cairns (to snorkel/dive the Great Barrier Reef) before flying back to Sydney. One potential problem is that, and this I didn't realize, the area where Cairns is is pretty much a tropical/rainforest (I don't associate rain forest with Aus) and the time that I would be there, the end of March, is the tail end of the rainy season (March has the highest rainfall of the year). Apparently the diving is great that time of year, which doesn't make sense to me but I read it on the WWW so it must be true!

This all costs money though. I am hoping to do a multi day "liveaboard" cruise of the reef, either snorkeling or diving (I know I would love to dive, but I just haven't gotten around to getting certified. I might do it this summer on LI). Cruises of this type start at around 400 and go up up up.

I also discovered that it is possible to climb bridges in some of the major cities. How many times have you gone over a bride and looked, with a bit of envy in your eye, at the workers climbing up those big thick cables to the support towers? Well in Aus, you can do that. For around 150.

Of course I would want to spend some time hanging out with Koala Bears, that costs at least 30 or so.

Even the basics, hostels and food, are expensive. A budget of 80-100 a day isn't too out of the question. Having spent so much time in 2nd/3rd world countries those numbers seem crazy to me. I was thriving in Bolivia on 20 a day!

Now I am thinking I might spend about 2 1/2 weeks in NZ (the southern island; which is equally expensive) and then 3 weeks in Aus. It doesn't take a calculator to do that math and get a pretty high number. Sigh. I could add more time to it (as I won't have anything to come home to) but my parents are moving out of NY in mid August which means I need to be out by then and every month I spend traveling is one less month spent finding a place to live and work. sigh.

Have you read Bill Bryson's books about Australia? They're hilarious and interesting and well worth a read. They've made me enamored with Australia and I've never even been there. :)

There's no need coming here. We have nothing you won'tr find in any other developed first world country. The US is cheaper; Europe is smaller. Save your money. Cross us off your list.

yes, anonymous stranger, but you will be my 7th continent! And you're the only country with the GBW.

The only place in Australia I've been to was Cairns -- the GBR is definitely worth the trip. People I know who drove north from Sydney said there was very little in-between, and they'd rather have skipped the drive. There's a large backpacker culture, which you might want to look into -- I'm sure you can find stuff online or a "shoestring" kind of guidebook.

I'd love to go to NZ. But yeah, it's probably expensive.

Aww you're coming to Aus!! Blah forget what the anonymous stranger said. Australia is a beautiful country! I'm not originally from here but I'll live here for the rest of my life. And yeah it rains a fair bit in Cairns no matter what time of year you come anyway, but you should definitely do the Great Barrier Reef before all the corals die from global warming. :(

And if you want to do the bridge climb, definitely do it in Sydney. It's awesome. There's also one in Brisbane (where I live) but I really don't think it's worth it. ;)

If you have any questions about Aus, drop me a line!

thanks, I definitely will! Perhaps if you are still in Brisbane next March we can meet up? I am planning on heading through there to check out one of the koala sanctuaries.

I'm not sure I'll be in Brisbane then.. planning to go over to the UK in Jan, but if things change, yeah I'd definitely be up for it!

Are you talking about Lone Pine?

Oh, and you can check out the famous Australia Zoo too while you're here, although I personally think it's a bit of a rip-off ;)

You'll be in the UK? Pity!

hmm.. could be Lone Pine. The LP guide I flipped through said there were three places to visit with koalas near brisbane. One of them has been operating for a good many years. But I forgot the name.

I think holding a koala would definitely be worth whatever money it cost. Holding a koala and swimming with manatees are the two animal related things I have to do at some point in my life.

yeah. It's a 2 1/2 hr trip and part of a guided tour. It seems a bit expensive but then again where else are you allowed to climb a bridge? You also aren't allowed to bring cameras which pisses me off. I will have to see when I get there if it is worth while.

Yeah, we abandoned the bridge idea because it did seem daftly expensive. We ended up going jet boating around Sidney harbour instead, which was great fun.

Yeah, Australia is awesome.

Its called absailing I think.

IF its your first time, I highly recommend going to the main attractions. Sydney (sydney opera house, etc), Sydney zoo (where you can hold a koala and have a picture with it =) ) Cairn, (there is an excellent island off of cairns for the great barrier reef).

I definitely hit a zoo though, Australia has so many different and unique animals you probably won't see elsewhere. Plus they have crocodile demonstrations too.

This makes me want to go back. I shall talk to my friend who lives in Australia and try to plan a trip, hehe.

there's also a village in a rain forest area in Cairns I think. It's a bit of a hike to get to, and I forget the name of it, it's something like Karakseiour or something haha. :P

My parents are having a holiday on the Great Barrier Reef at the moment. They get back next week and I'll see if I can grab any tips or recommendations for you.

And yes, you can climb bridges in Australia and NZ. You might be interested in doing a bungy jump too.

I have been thinking about doing a jump. I haven't gone BJing in about 11 years and I have always told myself that if I did it again it would be off a bridge in a foot harness. Seems like that might be the perfect place. I also just heard about Zorbing, and now I want to do that too. With all this adventure if I make it home alive I will be broke!

I think I´m still in shock from all the money I spent in Brazil in about 10 days...I need to head back home to Bolivia and curl up in a ball and save money! (Okay, it´s not that bad, I still have enough to bum around Argentina for a week or two!)

Cost was one of the reasons why I skipped Brazil (other two reasons: available time and visa costs). Arg can be pretty expensive as well, particularly transportation costs. However food, when I was there last Oct, was both delicious and cheap. I miss all the malbec wine. mmm...

Where are you heading in Arg?

I'm headed to BA tomorrow, but have about two weeks and no firm plans...I'm thinking Cordoba and Salta, as that will put me in the general direction of home. Or maybe Mendoza...or maybe some more time studying "the book" and head to somewhere smaller. Any suggestions that take me in a northerly direction? (I'm not headed any further south than BA 'cause it gets cold in that direction!!)

The only northern places I went to were Iguazu and Salta. I really really liked Salta though and wish I would have been able to spend more than 2 days there. It's a nice town, large enough to keep you busy but not so large that it is overwhelming.

I heard nice things about Cordoba and Mendoza. If you decide to rent a bicycle and spend the day visiting the vineyards someone suggested biking to the last vineyard and then work your way back. This way by the end of the day when you are drunk you are pretty close to your hotel!

That´s a genius plan! I´m not amazing on a bicycle, so a bicycle after a lot of wine is going to be hilarious!
