I loved The Road, as has just about everyone I have recommended it to (FINISH IT, FINISH IT!!). I was thinking about it today actually as it's a book I shouldn't like it. It's a fairly simple book. The language is concise. The story is basic and the cast of characters is minimal (and they become annoying). Plus you know right away that the ending is going to be a train wreck. Yet, it's amazingly compelling. I found it very hard to put down and I had wished I had started it on a day off so I could have finished it in one sitting!

I read Blindness years ago when it first came out. I don't remember much about it aside from the fact that I liked it. It is the only Saramago book that I like. I have tried a few others but never make much headway -- he seems to have really interesting ideas but is unable to fulfill the idea.
