did you like the road? I bought it but then was distracted by another book less than 15 pages in. I don't know if you have read Blindness by Saramago, but the road seemed kind of like that to me.

I loved The Road, as has just about everyone I have recommended it to (FINISH IT, FINISH IT!!). I was thinking about it today actually as it's a book I shouldn't like it. It's a fairly simple book. The language is concise. The story is basic and the cast of characters is minimal (and they become annoying). Plus you know right away that the ending is going to be a train wreck. Yet, it's amazingly compelling. I found it very hard to put down and I had wished I had started it on a day off so I could have finished it in one sitting!

I read Blindness years ago when it first came out. I don't remember much about it aside from the fact that I liked it. It is the only Saramago book that I like. I have tried a few others but never make much headway -- he seems to have really interesting ideas but is unable to fulfill the idea.

whoa fellow Nixon admirer may I suggest you read more philosophy? I read a book last year (for a class...sigh) that was excellent, I think its the best self-help book ever written... Its called The Will to Believe by William James. Its typical American style philosophy before it became consumed under the weight of Analytical philosophy. I mean its incredibly pithy and he is a true craftsman with words. a truly great book especially if you enjoy olde tyme language.

I am incredibly jealous. I've only read about 15, and many of those have been YA. Some of them were really long, though...500+ pages each.

I'm only at book 32 so far, but I'm confident I can make 52, which is my goal for the year. What's your favorite Auster? I liked "City of Glass" a lot. Of course, it was my first Auster and just blew me away.

I'm glad you enjoyed The Road! It was on my top list this year. Atonement is on my must-read list for this coming year, so I'm glad to see that you liked it.

Atonement is the best IM has to offer. I have been trying to get into him for sometime now and was happy to finally read Atonement and enjoy it. Often his boks seem to have a great idea but arent brought to fruition correctly.

Wow, wish I would have kept track of my reading list. Think I'll start making my way through anything with an asterisk, since so far your suggestions haven't failed.

Well its a new year... so start keeping your list now! Some of the ones that arent asteriked are two books by John Irving. JI continues to grow into one of my most favorite writers. Check out Prayer for Owen Meany.

How is lonesome george?

I just finished The World According to Garp last night, which I thoroughly enjoyed - it was a great holiday book, and even made me wish that my 5hr train journey coud have lasted another fifteen minutes of so as I had nearly finished it. And of course, it's nice to see some one else who spells Irving with a 'g' rather than the 'e' that everyone else seems to want to stick on the end of it!

Wow, this is an impressive list for one year. I can't even read 10 a year because of lack of time, and there are still many I definitely like to read before I am 30 =)
